In its quest for ever simpler ways of quickly viewing your image file collection, JPEGView provides a convenient slide show option, accessible via the File menu or via the command-key sequence ‚åòI. This will bring forth the slide show dialog box, presenting a series of options that allow you to control the way the slide show behaves. Below is a summary of what each option is and how it affects what you see in the slide show.
Frame Delay: This field lets you set the minimum amount of time, in seconds, that JPEGView waits before displaying the next image. More precisely, this timer begins counting when JPEGView has finished drawing an image. Once the chosen period has elapsed, JPEGView will begin drawing the following image, unless color quantization is still being performed on the new image. In this latter case, JPEGView will display the new image as soon as it has finished preparing it, meaning that the delay between images can sometimes exceed the value you have set.
Display in random order: Checking this box forces JPEGView to shuffle the list of slides at random before displaying them; otherwise, the images will be displayed in the order they were found.
Repeat indefinitely: If you check this box, JPEGView will run the slide show over and over, reshuffling the images after each repetition if you requested a random ordering; otherwise, JPEGView will end the slide show once it has finished displaying all the images it could find.
Select from images in memory: Clicking in this button means that JPEGView will construct its list of slides from the images you have been loaded into memory. If there are currently no images in memory, this item will not be available. Note that if you do select this option, the remaining slide show options become meaningless, and will no longer be available for you to change.
Select from images on disk: Clicking in this button tells JPEGView to build its list of slides from the names of the valid image files it finds on disk. Exactly where JPEGView looks for these images and how it handles the search can be controlled by setting the other parameters described below.
Select Slide Show Folder: This button brings up a dialog allowing you to select the folder containing the images you wish to have displayed in the slide show. The operation of this dialog box is very self-explanatory. Once selected, the chosen folder is displayed below this button.
Scan subfolders recursively: If you check this box, then JPEGView will not only display all the files in the folder you’ve selected, but will also scan any folders contained inside the selected folder, as well as folders within those folders, etc. In fact, you could even select the Desktop with this option checked, and JPEGView would happily scan all the folders on all mounted drives for images. I don’t really advise this, however — you can probably limit the search much more effectively!
Import unrecognized files: Checking this box causes JPEGView to add to its list of slide show images any files it finds in the selected folder, no matter what type of file the Finder says it is. As with the Import… feature in the File menu, this is for the most part only useful to those with CD-ROM drives that have lots of incorrectly typed files.
Cancel: This button not only cancels the slide show dialog, but also restores all the settings back to their previous values.
Begin: Once you’ve finished configuring the slide show, click this button to load and display the first image. If you have chosen to run a disk-based slide show, there may be a slight pause as the disk is scanned, especially if there are numerous subfolders to scan. After things get going, you can abort the slide show at any time by simply pressing any key or clicking the mouse. If your images are being quantized, there may sometimes be a significant delay before JPEGView responds to your request to stop, so be patient!
